Hi! This is Carrie. As one of our first posts on the website, and my first post ever, I decided to jump right in with committing to a diet and exercise program – 21 Day Fix. I was waiting outside a patient’s room and saw an infomercial for 21 Day Fix. I was intrigued by the amount of weight and inches people lost and that the exercise portion was only 30 minutes each night. I have had success with P90X in the past, but the 60-90 minutes of nightly exercise is too much of a commitment with having two young, school age kids. I mean, I want to do more than exercise after I put the kids to bed!
Why We’re Starting 21 Day Fix
If there is one thing people know about me it is that: I love to eat! I center my whole day on eating and plan my next meal usually while I am still eating :-). My love for food probably comes from my southern upbringing as I have been fighting with obesity and being overweight for as long as I can remember. But, I played sports in High School and some college and have tried to stay active and eat healthy to combat gaining weight. People say: “You don’t need to loose weight, why are you going on a diet?” I am within a normal BMI for my height, but I really would like to tone more and loose that last stubborn 5-10 pounds. After having 2 large babies (8 pounds 7 oz and 9 pounds 12 ounces) my stomach and waist line isn’t what it used to be!
What is 21 Day Fix?
21 Day Fix is a diet and exercise program designed by BeachBody.com. The program comes with a meal planning guide which concentrates on portion control while including healthier foods. (I am not an expert on clean eating, but some have said this qualifies.) Each person falls into 1 of 4 categories of calorie intake based on your current weight. Each category identifies how many of each color container one can eat in a day. The 21 Day Fix provides color coded containers for easy preparation. Rather than fork out the entire cost of the program, my frugal husband (see MoneyAhoy.com) helped me cut the costs! With some googling we found out the capacity each container holds, and I went to Wal-Mart and The Dollar Tree and picked up the correct sizes for under $6.
In addition there is a 30 minute exercise routine to perform each night. The 21 Day Fix routines include:
- upper body
- lower body
- pilates
- yoga
- cardio
- plyo
- and abs
I haven’t looked at these yet workout videos yet, but after P90X (and trying INSANITY) they have to be easier. Right? This should still give my husband and I some time to watch an episode on Netflix before going to bed.
Why I Think It’s Going to Work for Us
With my love for food I need some help with portion control, and the 21 Day Fix provides this. The food guide also includes how to adapt your daily allowance for going out to eat in addition to providing some 21 Day Fix approved desserts and meal ideas. I am hoping that the meals are flavorful and quench my love for food. The great thing is you can plan meals that are kid friendly. This is very important in my house as I refuse to fix two separate meals nightly!
Again, I am hoping to lose that last 5-10 pounds around my waist line. When researching the program, we saw a lot of encouraging photos where women had lost weight in the areas I want to. As I said before, the time of the workout sessions should also fit nicely into our daily routine and leave time for us to enjoy a bit of time with each other before the end of the day.

Good luck with your new program. We can all use a little portion control reminding from time to time. I like how you found a more economical way to do the containers. Good luck!

Thanks Deborah! So true about the portion control – the containers have been a great reminder this past week 🙂
